For starters, Roger Avary – who wrote the first movie – may not return. He’s, uh, busy. And while we don’t know which cast members, if any, will be returning, Carmody confirms that Christophe Gans won’t be back in the director’s chair, as he “wants to direct something new”.

Carmody then opens up on the course the movie will take, while at the same time addressing some of the complaints fans of the series had over the first film’s tone and depiction of familiar characters.

“I think we need to make it a little more accessible to the movie-going public”, he told STYD. “Silent Hill is not a blockbuster game like Resident Evil or the other games out there. It’s a connoisseurs’ game. It has its own, rabid fan base. They’re not cheap, these things. You have to appeal not only to the gamers, you have to appeal to a wider audience. So we have to get some story in there that helps explain a bit more. I think that’s all happening. Of course, [the story] is going to happen years later and the main character – without giving too much away – is much older and representative to the movie-going public which is in that age group.”

The upcoming Green Lantern films seems to be taking shape, as a casting call has been making the rounds on the web, which have some key (but non-spoileriffic) details about the plot of the Ryan Reynolds vehicle.

Warning: This MAY be considered spoiler material. (Although, really, it isn’t.)

[CAROL FERRIS]
26-32, a smart and attractive woman with an MBA. She started as a pilot and now runs Ferris Aircraft. She is a work-a-holic…FEMALE LEAD

[DR. HECTOR HAMMOND]
27-35, Character actor who is austere and impersonal, he is real “scummy.” He is a pathologist and also the son of a Senator.

[SINESTRO]
Mid-30s to Mid-40s, he is smart, tough, intimidating and in great physical shape.

[ABIN SUR]
Mid-30s to mid-40s, he is a great warrior.

Judging by this list of players, they seem to be laying the foundation for a lasting franchise with plenty of comic nods. It’s the proverbial “Curt Connors” technique used in the Spider-Man films, as potential villains for future films are introduced in low-key and innocuous roles that at least put them into the mythos of films universe. It’s a promising sign that Warner/DC is devoting some dramatic TLC to the much-anticipated live-action debut of Hal Jordan.

Let’s role down the list a bit:

Carol Ferris: In the Green Lantern lore, she is destined to be the villain, Star Saphire, one of the members of the group of Star Saphires who wield power rings in a similar vein to Green Lantern’s. The primary difference, however, is that these rings possess the wearer to do its will. Clearly, the actress who will fill this role NEEDS to be able to play a super-powered villainess that is in constant mental conflict, perhaps also slightly seduced by the power against which she is helpless in containing. (While she is named simply as the “female lead,” the possibility of her being a love interest in this film could be a game-changer.)

Hector Hammond: Due to a radioactive meteorite, he is changed into an immobile, giant-headed creature with high intellect and telepathic/telekinetic abilities. He is also destined for some legendary clashes with Green Lantern. However, there will likely be a great deal of liberties taken with how he will eventually be realized in the potential future films. In the meantime, this is a role that may go to a solid actor, probably with some comedic abilities to throw in the mix (due to the absurdity of his future incarnation.)

Sinestro: What would a comic book film be without a great villain? (Answer: Punisher films.) Anyway, this is ironically the most important, yet easiest character to cast. There are just some actors that ooze the aura of a villain. Rumors generated from an early version of the script seemed to point to a “Palpatine/Anakin” type of relationship with Hal Jordan, in which Sinestro endears himself early as a trusted advisor, only to be revealed later as the primary schemer. Therefore, this one all depends on how they want to go about setting the context.

Abin Sur: Obviously NOT a villain. He is, of course, the ill-fated alien visitor (the character is famous FOR dying, I spoil nothing,) who passes on the Green Lantern ring to test pilot, Hal Jordan. In many ways, he’s the Obi-Wan to Jordan’s Luke. This will clearly be cast with an older actor (perhaps older than the description,) who can pull off playing a wise, but wistful alien, who is desperate to ensure the Green Lantern legacy continues. This actor must also be resigned to the fact that this role will more likely than not, be a CAMEO. (Although there’s always flashback potential.)

Overall, I’m liking what I’m hearing as far as the film itself is concerned. It will also be interesting to see how the drama over the shooting location will be resolved. Whether a move from Australia to possibly Louisiana (as rumors have stated) will benefit the film on a production level remains to be seen. (Although, they could do worse things than to pump some money into a post-Katrina New Orleans.)

Anyway, I will leave my casting suggestions to myself, but who do YOU think should fill these roles? (Knowing how they will evolve.)

this summer has been kind of slow for movies in my opinion, which is why district 9 was such a welcomed addition. portrayed as a documentary, district 9 weaves a very believable story about inter-species relations while bringing serious human/alien rights questions to light.
i don’t want to spill too much about the story because it’s so much better to watch this movie fresh. basically the documentary follows the misadventures of an mnu officer trying to serve eviction notices to refugee aliens while breaking in his replacement. the mnu is a weapons developer hired not only to police district 9, but to secretly discover and research as much alien technology as possible. what our protagonist finds will set into motion an exhilirating ride that will change not only the future of district 9, but perhaps the fate of our planet.
with a budget of just 30 million dollars, district 9 has excellent effects. the prawn (a derogatory term for the aliens) look very real in their interactions with humans. the sound was also incredible and i would recommend watching this movie in dlp if available. 3/12 stars out of 4.
